Carpet and Rug Cleaning

  • Vacuum up particles
  • Spot-Clean First with Club Soda or for greasy stains, try shaving cream.
  • Sprinkle with Baking Soda or Zeolite & leave Overnight for odor removal
  • In a 5 gallon bucket of hot water, mix 1-2 Tbsp. Soapworks Liquid Laundry detergent (less soap for softwater) + 2 tablespoons baking soda (breaks up suds)
  • Be sure to rinse with hot water until waste water is clearer

  • Alternative method is by mixing 1 tablespoon of detergent as above and 1 tablespoon Chlorox 2, color-fast bleach that contains hydrogen peroxide.

PfSE members have tried the Rug Shampoo by Earth Friendly Products (www.ecos.com) and found it performs very well for general carpet shampooing. Susan JunFish prefers this product because the home-made products leave carpets crunchy feeling! It smells great with Bergamot citrus and is reportedly all-natural. Diluted 40:1, this product for less than $10 can last for years, even if you shampoo over 2000 sq ft every 6 months. (Please note that PfSE recommends not having carpeting if you have allergies!) It's been seen at Whole Foods stores. Many natural grocery stores will stock products upon request, such as Open Sesame (925-283-2207) in Lafayette did for us. Tell them we sent you!
